I know I'm late to this one, but it's always so obvious the people commenting have no clue what they're talking about. Gorillas don't behave like humans. They stress each other out sometimes. But, that is how they grow. The main takeaway from this video is that Haoko wanted to play (or maybe mate), but Momoko was obviously focused on caring for her child, so Nana stepped in to help her when she saw Momoko wasn't interested. That's a sign of a strong troop. Haoko doesn't know it, but his "aggression" is actually strengthening the bond between the matriarchs. They don't have the capacity to communicate through words or to rationalize their behavior, so they subconsciously learn through action. Haoko didn't maul them-his "bites" are actually just him scraping his teeth along their fur to tickle them. It's extremely common when gorillas want to play-fight. After all, what is YOUR reaction to tickling? To either cover your vitals or fight back. It's a much nicer way to train his troop to be defensive, even if they may not like it. Naturally, this culminated in the matriarchs shunning Haoko back in December, lol. He also learned something from this: he's not the leader of the troop. The matriarchs are, and the matriarchs are devoted to their children. He's an occupational servant that can be discarded as they wish. (They've since regrouped, thankfully.) First step to animal care is to identify the benefit of social interactions no matter how ugly they look to us, and to never project our social norms onto them.
He does not just scrape his teeth. I saw two big holes in Konomos back. Consider if in the wild if a silverback is aggressive, the female can walk away. They are incarcerated and cannot walk away. Yes they are gorillas but I still have empathy.
This is abusive even in the gorilla world. Hakao always goes after her. His kids are very wary of him even today. Look at his pursed gums and his fists together on the ground, both signs of anger. He is not tickling and having fun, It is sad and she has no where else to go. If in the wild he would have some of that aggression spent on protection and climbing etc, but here he takes it out on Momoko. He can be really mean, although kind to the children when they are small. He had a wonderful and nurturing mother. His full brother Shabani is not like this at all. Apparently Kibabu his father could be like this too. They all have their personalities. I am sure Momoko would have left him a long time ago if he behaved in this way in the wild.
You both are so right. Poor animals! What a torture is this never ending noise! I never had such a scene in our Zoo. Their enclosures are beautiful, all is peaceful and quiet. Like Paradise. If I see in the videos here such a poor animal trying to sleep, and NOBODY lowers the voice, I feel I could cry in anger and helpless feeling because of the animals.
Love to Komono and Nana. This is what happens when they are not free to wander in the forest. People talk about conservation but more interested in amusement. I have deep compassion for the little ones . One video after Komomo was physically attacked she sat with her back to tourist and I saw her shaking. I think she was crying. She is a brave lovely soul and I understand they are protected by poachers . I ask myself at what cost. Better for me to let it go and hope for a better day. The contrast of all that laughter and seeing her cry. Not this video was an eye opener.
I’m with commentor Michael below some of the stupid comments made of oh the Zoo should do something. Gorillas aren’t humans, what you see is ordinary gorilla behavior, but you also see all the females going after RandyAndy. The females are in charge. He’s the muscle an protector. Haoko still is a randy gorilla but now not so insistent when Momoko is not having it
I'm getting tired of watching multiple videos of momoko traumatizing all the female and baby gorillas..... How do the female gorillas get peace and sleep with his crazy ass !
You need glasses or some cognitive intelligence. Yes with Kintaro she were and is a great mother but with gentaro she is a terrible mother never give him attention and love it isn’t like he didn’t exist . No wonder Gentaro is so sad and most by himself.
Try Freddie from the Cleveland Zoo, she is fostering 2 baby gorillas which was rejected by the birth mothers. And she is 52 years, and also she gives love and attention to both of them.
Haoko is the oldest Shabani ‘s brother and they behave completely different. Shabani is always playing with his kids and it’s more sweet but Haoko is more aloof and more serious and doesn’t play with his kids than Shabani, but sometimes he decides to play and he’s very fun when he does since he’s humorous, a very big gorilla, trying to run.
This silver back needs to be by himself that's all he does is abuse his females. Almost every video I watch he's usually biti g them all day long. That's abuse
Okay he is a silverback gorilla. He's showing his dominance. Then also his younger brother does things like this when he wants to play. They don't live the same way we do. Chill.
He had 3 at this time. Nana, Momoko and Toto. Nana has since passed, but with only 20 gorillas in Japan he already had more mates than all the other males.
Haoko just wants to make contact with his child; and the mother is simply way too protective. Haoko TAKES the liberty... and mom had no choice but to let him smell and touch his child. The other overprotective female interferes and butts into Haoko's business; and then rightfully gets admonished! Humans can learn a lot from gorillas! Would've liked to see the nosey female get a few more bruises than she received for interfering!
Please he's annoying I was just watching a video of him picking at a female and they didn't have a baby on them. He's picking just like a lot of male gorillas in captivity do when they are bored.
Turns out Nana was a tough old lady, she wasn't scared of Haoko. R.I.P. Nana.

Excellent analysis.
I think Haoko wanted to examine baby or possibly mate seeming most vids I see is him going for it even when they are not ready.
He does not just scrape his teeth. I saw two big holes in Konomos back. Consider if in the wild if a silverback is aggressive, the female can walk away. They are incarcerated and cannot walk away. Yes they are gorillas but I still have empathy.

Bit disturbing watching these videos and the amount of noise made by people, it must have some effect on the animals.
I don't understand how people can be so ride this is rediculous and the zoo truly should do something about it

Tou do realize there is a very very think piece if glass between them? When Haoko growls or hoots we can't hear it because of this. It works both ways
In the wild if the Silverback mistreats them the girls will run off with another Silverback but these poor lady
s are stuck with Haoko.
He just wants to play.
Haoko is randy! He's always randy!
The females are just not interested, in his constant amour.

Too much rumour make poor animals already stressed is komono and the noise of people I think increases stress

Momoko is one of the females. Haoko is the male gorilla.
Is that baby the off spring of Haoko?
Yes that's sweet little Komomo.
Nana. Great lady. RIP
Dimanakah gorila nana sekarang
OMG the damn noise is enough to scare anyone off
Who is Nana ?
Poor baby! I thought he would get hurt when she sat on him like that. She just couldn't seem to hold him right.
But that was the way baby komomo chose to ride, she never got hurt she knew exactly what she was doing.
To keep that alert cretin off her pvt. Parts.
Why they didn’t protect her zoo people
Not happy

Maybe he needs more females to occupy his time. Two is not exactly troupe or group.

Horrible video work!
